OPP To Crack Down  On 401 Speeders

The Ontario Provincial police are finally going to crack down on the increase of high speeders on the 401. This as a more recent result of a third major accident in the region involving a freight truck and a mini van carrying a team of soccer players from Waterloo who were on there way to a game in London. The mini van was rear ended and then sent in between two transports merging in to lane reductions due to construction near Ayr on the 401. The force of the crash pinned one of the youngsters in between two of the seats in the van that they were traveling in. he was air lifted to a hospital in Hamilton with serious injuries. Others were sent to Cambridge Memorial Hospital and some to St. Mary's by ambulance. The driver of the mini van 50 year old Mr. Congi was quoted as saying everyone had been released from the hospital by Monday with the accident having happened on the Thursday during March Break. The volunteer Coach Congi said that speed was definitely a factor in the accident, and was quoted for saying "I don't know why the truck behind me was going so fast" and "I'm still trying to figure out why" and "we're just lucky that the injuries weren't more serious". The truck driver who smashed into the back of the van was charged with careless driving. Police are reported as saying that he wasn't paying attention.
On the Monday morning following the accident the OPP ticketed 41 drivers in a three hour period with the lowest speeder being 134-km and the fastest being 158-km in a posted 100 zone.
Police are saying that it's people who are traveling through the area and don't know the conditions that are causing the problems.
